Pair of Pedestals

These rosewood and gilt pedestals, made for Nathan and Maria Appleton’s new home on Beacon Hill in Boston, were called “candelabri” and were designed to hold lamps or candles. The elaborate materials used on the pedestals (imported rosewood, ornamental brass mounts, and extensively gilded carvings) were clear signifiers that their owners could afford the best.
